Sclerotogenous Neck Pain
What Feinstein found:
Did you know that pain or irritation in the neck can make you feel pain in other places?
Upper Cervical neck pain can sometimes radiate to the head, causing headaches. Because it's hard to feel exactly where the pain is when you have pain in the neck, you are probably feeling it in other places too. Researchers found the these results when they injected volunteers with a salt solution designed to irritate the muscles and joints in the neck. They injected the deep neck muscles.

They found some interesting pain referral patterns as they went further down the neck. As they irritated the lower parts of the neck, they found that the pain radiated into the shoulder blade and even down the arm. This pattern wasn't exactly the same course as the nerves take, so they guessed that it takes the course of muscle (myotome) development. In other words, the muscles that sprout out of common areas as other muscles during development also feel the pain.
We see this kind of pattern every day in our office. Someone comes in saying that they have pain between the shoulder blades. While the muscle are usually tight in that area, the neck is usually swollen and irritated.
