Team Sports as a Public Health Measure?

February 19th, 2010 by LloydChiro

Playing team sports in high school make a person healthier, more successful, and happier decades later in life.  This is according to a New York Times article written this week.

The article applies this to girls, but it’s clear that the data shows that it applies to boys and girls.  It’s easy to see the changes in girls, though, because girl’s team sports participation has increased a lot over the past 50 years.

“It’s not just that the people who are going to do well in life play sports, but that sports help people do better in life,” she [Betsey Stevenson, an economist at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania] said, adding, “While I only show this for girls, it’s reasonable to believe it’s true for boys as well.”
