Too much Tylenol can have an accumulative, damaging effect on your liver and brain.

I’m very sympathetic to people who suffer from chronic pain or chronic recurring pain. However, people need to realize the damaging effects that Tylenol has on your liver and brain.

It’s a common thing for people to desperately overdose on Tylenol when having an episode of pain. But, this can create an acute toxicity that may send you to the hospital for emergency kidney dialysis. But even more insidious, having many smaller overdoses of Tylenol over time can add up and damage your liver and brain, according to this article.

This is just one example why you need to keep your body tuned up in tip-top shape to the best of your ability.

  1. Too much of a good thing can be dangerous.

I am a bit surprised that pharmacists and physicians don’t warn their patients more about the dangers of chronic use of these medications. Two sentences is all it would take “Only take for two weeks then quit. Taken too often, it will damage your organs.”

Patients might then begin to rethink their aches and pains, ‘cowboy-up’ a bit.

The evidence of the dangers is not new. I remember reading an article published in December 1994 in the NEJM that looked at the dangers of Tylenol and other NSAIDs. In that study, the kidney damage was highlighted. It seems like the researchers found that 8-10% of all kidney failure could be attributed to long-term use of those medications.
