I just gave a speech at the Santa Rosa Toastmaster Club 182 on the wonderdrug that Vitamin D is. Here’s a story from the ‘Times that shows even more benefit.

Don’t be mislead into thinking that you can get the right amount of Vitamin-D from milk, like the picture suggests. Milk gives you about 100 IUs of Vitamin-D in a glass. Most of the sources that I read say that you should supplement up to 10,000 IUs of Vitamin-D to catch up to optimal levels.
Vitamin-D is a steroid hormone made from the cholesterol in the body in response to sun hitting the skin, or taken in from the diet from fatty fish, like Cod. It’s rare to find it in other foods, but it is artificially fortified in milk. While the milk fortification is a good thing, it is not enough to replenish the Vitamin-D levels in the body. If you were fortunate enough to live in a sunny climate closer to the equator, and you spent time in the sun, your body would make enough Vitamin-D to fully benefit from it’s protective effects. Since we can’t all sunbathe throughout the day, supplementation is necessary.
